Before all the museum curators, photographers and artists of the world flock down south for the winter to celebrate Art Basel, Miami welcomes hundreds of authors, journalists and other literary idols for the 33rd edition of the Miami Book Fair!
The Miami Book Fair is a literary and cultural celebration full of entertaining and educational activities spanning over eight days (Sunday, November 13th – Sunday, November 20th) at MDC’s Wolfson Campus. From readings to signings, the amount of events taking place makes it impossible to hit them all, so I put together this guide to highlight some of the main events you must attend!
Today I read an article from Highsnobiety titled “Why Do Women’s Sneaker Options Suck so Much?” I too ask myself that on the daily; as well as other questions raised by the author such as: “how many women collectors can you name? How many women’s signature lines?” It’s a small number, but they’re definitely out there. While I agree that having to sometimes order sneakers in the smallest men’s size or the largest kids’ size isn’t exactly ideal, I couldn’t help but think that we are currently in the middle of a big change within the sneaker industry. Instead of complaining about the lack of selection of women’s sneakers, I wanted to shed some light on how much the market catering to female sneakerheads has actually grown.
Six years ago, news broke out about the first ever female Jordan collaboration. In 2010, Vashtie Kola announced that she reimagined the classic Air Jordan 2 with a new colorway- making her the first female to design a Jordan. Vashtie, as well as illustrator Sophia Chang, have also recently collaborated on collections with Puma, as it is one of the few mainstream athletic brands that really encourages female empowerment. In 2014, Puma named Rihanna the brand’s new women’s creative director and since then has released Creepers and Trainers for women in more than 10 colorways combined. Even on a smaller scale, we have Caroll Lynn, the current women’s footwear designer for Filling Pieces.
Again, these are only a few examples and it’s obviously not going to happen over night, but thankfully we have women like Vashtie and Caroll Lynn breaking into the boy’s club to provide us with a broader sneaker assortment that doesn’t include the dreaded sneaker wedge.
This Friday, February 12th, the Popcorn Frights Film Festival will host a special screening of Wes Craven’s Scream for it’s 20th Anniversary at O Cinema!
Kevin Williamson’s writing coupled with Wes Craven’s direction resulted in a film that was definitely ahead of it’s time but was also an instant hit. Released in 1996, the cult classic Scream follows Sidney Prescott, one of the strongest and most bad-ass female leads the horror genre has ever seen, who is being attacked by an unknown masked killer a year after her mother was murdered in Woodsboro, California.
I suggest you get there early because before Scream, there will be a quick screening of the short film “The Disturber” from writer/director Michael Vermaercke. AND… for all you super fans of the iconic slasher flick, the first 30 people to arrive will receive a special little gift
The screening starts at 11PM and will be held at O Cinema’s Wynwood location- tickets are only $12!
Bring bae and kick off Valentine’s Weekend with a scream!

It’s that time of year again! RL Grime released the 4th volume of his annual Halloween Mix to kick off the boozy weekend and celebrate what is arguably the thottiest holiday of the year.
Unlike the previous volumes, which are introduced by Goosebumps author R.L. Stine, this year’s mix opens up with a voicemail from Hannibal Buress shamelessly begging to be included in the mix as he tries to be “Chicago’s AVICCI” and then claiming to like Clockwork (RL’s house-centric alter ego) better. After over an hour of trap transitions between spooky samples like Hurricane Chris’ “A Bay Bay,” Yeezy’s verse from Future’s “I Won”, and the repetitive hooks from A$AP Rocky’s “LPFJ2″ and Migos’ “Why You Mad,” RL Grime wraps it up with his remix of The Weeknd’s “The Hills,” some Chief Keef, and wicked words from R.L. Stine.
Download the mix off soundcloud, dress up (or down), and ask your uber driver for the aux cord as you party hop around the city this Halloweekend.
Gucci Mane is the definition of hustle. Incarceration hasn’t seemed to phase Gucci one bit. In fact, Gucci is probably doing better behind bars now than when he was free. Not only has he released multiple mixtapes, but Gucci has also released many albums that are worth purchasing. A recent example is the trio of albums he released last March. Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner features artists such as Makonnen, Trinidad James, and the ever so funny Andy Milonakis. To show Guwop my appreciation, I have curated Snack, a playlist on Spotify of the best tracks (okay, my favorites) from those albums. SOOOOOOOOOO, free Gucci- or don’t, we’re still getting bangers either way.
UPDATE: Since I last worked on this, Gucci has released yet another fucking mixtape: Trapology
Two prominent streetwear labels, The Hundreds and 40s & Shorties, have teamed up and released an exclusive collaboration to commemorate the LA streets where it all started, Farifax and Rosewood. This dope capsule collection will be comprised of socks and tees featuring signature graphics unique to each brand- Bobby Hundreds’ DeLorean and 40s & Shorties’ Ice Cream Truck. Although I’ve only visited Cali a couple times, it was obvious that streets such as Fairfax and La Brea are unlike any other, they straight up ooze with culture- particularly the street/skatewear culture as they’re home to stores such as Stüssy and Supreme. Peep the lookbook below and start thinking about what you want to cop as the collection drops online, at The Hundreds flagships, and other select retailers Friday, June 26th.
Ultimate badd girl M.I.A. is this week’s #WCW (well, more like woman crush everyday, les be honest). After recently making headlines for subtweeting with former bae Diplo, M.I.A went to Twitter again a couple of weeks ago to make a little PSA- this time to tease an unreleased demo. Dubbed “Platforms,” the demo is a quintessential M.I.A. track featuring sick beats and politically-charged lyrics. Hopefully this is just a little taste of an upcoming fifth studio album. Listen to “Platforms” below and let me know what you think!
Earlier this year an account for a photo-editing app called Leanified followed me on Twitter and I immediately followed back. Heavily influenced by Yung Lean and the #sadboys movement, I knew the app would turn out to be a huge success even though it had yet to launch. Now, about two short months since the official launch, the app has reached over 30 thousand downloads! I recently had the opportunity to speak with the founder, Adrian Herrera, on how the app came to fruition and how it initiated a new wave of digital art.
In an interview you did with Grape Magazine, I read that this all started while you were listening to Yung Lean (of course) and took the idea you had of a photo-editing app to Twitter in order to convince your friend, and now partner, David de Jesus. What came after?
At first he wasn’t very enthusiastic about the idea, but I told him I’d ask my Twitter followers for their opinion. That tweet quickly got several favorites and comments, so I showed him and said we should make it. He jokingly said, “I’ll build it if you can get 100 favorites by midnight.” I didn’t really think it was going to be possible, but I did my best to growth hack that tweet and by midnight we had over 100 retweets and 160 favorites. So after that he pretty much had to build it. Once I started posting up images of UI and possible image packs on our Leanified Instagram and Twitter accounts we started gain some real interest. About a month and a half later David started coding it. Once he actually saw some of the reactions from our fans, he started to get pretty excited about working on the app.
Are there other people apart of the team, or is it just you and David doing everything?
Before we launched I got my friend Kevin to help us with the social media, like the posting, commenting, and keeping everything up-to-date. Then shortly after we launched we noticed a bunch of different people who would be on our social media and would always comment, and one of these kids- his name is actually Dan- would kind of always be in tune. Some of the other users would always be asking questions on social media and he would just immediately answer them so David and I both noticed how into Leanified he was and now he’s sort of interning for us in the sense that he’s doing everything he can to help. We’re involving him in more and more things as we go on, like the tutorial video is something he did for us.
The app already comes with pre-loaded stickers such as the Arizona Tea and Fiji water which are obvious nods to Yung Lean, but who or what are some of your other influences for the app?
Well he [Yung Lean] kind of sparked the initial idea but once the app launched and we saw the different styles from the users, they really became the big inspiration- they come up with things we couldn’t even imagine that you could make on the app. In specific there’s this one guy on Instagram (@IAMYUNGTURK) who actually has a whole case of amazing work where he pretty much turns real fine art pieces into Leanified-like edits. You can see the growth in each user’s skills as they post multiple edits, their compositions become more refined and advanced.
As we further discussed the rise of this form of digital reappropriation of art and his dislike towards the somewhat inevitable uniformity that comes from the app’s pre-loaded sticker packs, he also mentioned that there will be new signature artists packs coming in the future. Adrian also said they are currently planning a new app that will provide more professional tools for photo editing. Additionally, the team has just secured a prime location for Leanified’s HQ in LA so you can only expect bigger things to come!
Before we parted ways I asked Adrian if he could design a special edit for this interview and this is what he blessed us with:
SO, all you #sadboys and #sadgirls better go download Leanified and make your photos more emotional.
