Women Changing the Sneaker Game

Today I read an article from Highsnobiety titled “Why Do Women’s Sneaker Options Suck so Much?” I too ask myself that on the daily; as well as other questions raised by the author such as: “how many women collectors can you name? How many women’s signature lines?” It’s a small number, but they’re definitely out there. While I agree that having to sometimes order sneakers in the smallest men’s size or the largest kids’ size isn’t exactly ideal, I couldn’t help but think that we are currently in the middle of a big change within the sneaker industry. Instead of complaining about the lack of selection of women’s sneakers, I wanted to shed some light on how much the market catering to female sneakerheads has actually grown.

Six years ago, news broke out about the first ever female Jordan collaboration. In 2010, Vashtie Kola announced that she reimagined the classic Air Jordan 2 with a new colorway- making her the first female to design a Jordan. Vashtie, as well as illustrator Sophia Chang, have also recently collaborated on collections with Puma, as it is one of the few mainstream athletic brands that really encourages female empowerment. In 2014, Puma named Rihanna the brand’s new women’s creative director and since then has released Creepers and Trainers for women in more than 10 colorways combined. Even on a smaller scale, we have Caroll Lynn, the current women’s footwear designer for Filling Pieces.

Again, these are only a few examples and it’s obviously not going to happen over night, but thankfully we have women like Vashtie and Caroll Lynn breaking into the boy’s club to provide us with a broader sneaker assortment that doesn’t include the dreaded sneaker wedge.

40s & Shorties x The Hundreds

40s & Shorties x The Hundreds

Two prominent streetwear labels, The Hundreds and 40s & Shorties, have teamed up and released an exclusive collaboration to commemorate the LA streets where it all started, Farifax and Rosewood. This dope capsule collection will be comprised of socks and tees featuring signature graphics unique to each brand- Bobby Hundreds’ DeLorean and 40s & Shorties’ Ice Cream Truck. Although I’ve only visited Cali a couple times, it was obvious that streets such as Fairfax and La Brea are unlike any other, they straight up ooze with culture- particularly the street/skatewear culture as they’re home to stores such as Stüssy and Supreme. Peep the lookbook below and start thinking about what you want to cop as the collection drops online, at The Hundreds flagships, and other select retailers Friday, June 26th.

A Pintrill Valentine

A Pintrill Valentine

Still haven’t purchased a Valentine’s Day gift for bae? Then visit Pintrill’s site right now. With the recent release of its “True Love” collaboration with French artist Trysa, and the re-stock of the “BAE” pin, Pintrill has got you covered this year.

Pintrill is a streetwear accessory brand that was established just last year out of Brooklyn. Heavily influenced by New York City and the surrounding pop culture, the guys over at Pintrill are constantly designing multiple collections of pins that range from your favorite Emojis to popular song lyrics and collaborate with musicians and artists such as Theophilus London and Naomi Otsu- so if you don’t know, now you know.

As a fashion accessory that can be worn by anyone and with only a limited quantity produced and sold, these statement pins are v rare and sure to “elevate your style” as intended.

Converse x Andy Warhol Spring ’15

Converse x Andy Warhol Spring ’15

Last week Agenda hit NYC and it left me reminiscing about last summer when I went to the tradeshow with the Gearbottle homies. Hopping from booth to booth to network with various brands and cover their new collections and collaborations isn’t too bad when you can sip on some liq and snap pics with rappers such as Waka and Gunplay. While I was there I visited the Converse booth and was fortunate enough to get an early look at their Andy Warhol collaboration. About half a year later it will finally be available for purchase online and at select retailers starting February 7th.

The Andy Warhol Chuck Taylor All Star collection features an array of graphic tees and the classic sneaker in both high- and low-top silhouettes. Each piece highlights some of Warhol’s most unique and celebrated art work. Best of all, the collection ranges from $35-$90 and a portion of the proceeds goes towards The Andy Warhol Foundation.

I’m not diggin’ the sneaker wedges, but overall the collection is pretty dope. Keep an eye open on the Converse site to browse and cop the collection next month. In the mean time, check out some of my favorite items below.

Rihanna for Puma

rihanna-saint-laurent-fur-knit-cardigan

Recent news has broken out regarding pop sensation Rihanna working closely with one of the world’s top leading activewear brands. The infamous bad gal has signed a multiyear partnership with Puma naming her as the brand’s new women’s creative director. Additionally, the 2014 CFDA’s Fashion Icon winner will serve as the brand’s global ambassador alongside Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt.

During her first creative session over at Puma’s headquarters in Germany last Monday night, Riri had some time to sit down with WWD and made it clear that she will be heavily involved with everything just as she was with MAC- “from creating packaging to going through textures.”

Regardless if you’re a fan of hers or not, you must admit the girl knows how to assemble a perfectly balanced sporty and posh outfit. I’m excited to see her bold designs and how she’s going to make Puma relevant again in 2015.

MY ALEXANDER WANG + H&M PICKS

WELL, so we are all currently on the craze for the new H&M collection with Alexander Wang. California-born turned NY-resident, Wang currently designs for his own collections as well as serves as Creative Director of Balenciaga. I’m a self-proclaimed tomboy and Wang’s simplistic high-quality designs and fabric are right up my alley of relaxed fit with that designer touch.

6104_LB_105

I’m very much against designer collaborations with large retailers. From the Phillip Lim Target collection (i do have the purses though!) to the Versace H&M release from a few years ago, these short-term lower-quality releases are exposed to the masses and in a city as big as Miami end up on the backs of every other “fashionable” person in the scene. Thats where I’ve been apprehensive to news and coverage on the current A Wang release as well as keeping up with the details.

But…with the release dropping in a few hours I’ve found myself looking at all the pieces, making my choices and … planning with my friends to race to the nearest mall to achieve success in some highly planned purchases. Check out my picks below for my favorite items and if you’re on the search for these items…good luck!
